Mounting a television is twenty minutes of drilling and one decision that matters: what is behind the wall. A bracket rated for the set means nothing if the fixing is wrong for what it is going into — and a partition wall with a 65-inch screen on the wrong anchor holds long enough for everyone to forget about it.

So we check the wall first. Concrete, brick, drywall and hollow block each take a different fixing, and where a partition cannot carry the load we say so before anything is drilled rather than after.
